New School Hours for 2021-2022
On August 9th, students in the Chaffey Joint Union High School District will begin their 1st period class at 8:30 a.m. (Monday through Thursday). Students who choose to enroll in 0 period classes will begin earlier. The regular school day will end at 3:20 p.m. 7th period classes and after school activities will be offered at the conclusion of the regular school day. Fridays will remain a late start day, with 1st period beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the school day concluding at 3:20 p.m.
This start time aligns with Senate Bill 328 Pupil attendance: school start time approved by Governor Newsom in 2019.
Although the legislation will not be implemented until 2022, the District will institute the 8:30 a.m. start time in 2021 for two reasons:
- To expand flexible learning opportunities for students before and after school next year, especially for those students who may need more time to strengthen skills and recover credits lost during COVID-19 school shutdowns
- To establish a new schedule when students return to school in 2021 and avoid another change for students, families, and staff in 2022.
Numerous studies have concluded that later school start times present multiple health, safety, and learning benefits for adolescents. Furthermore, institutions including the American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend later school start times for adolescents as a major national health initiative.
The District’s new start time aligns with findings by health science experts who conclude that later school start times can support adolescents’ need to obtain sufficient sleep on school nights, maintain optimal alertness in the classroom environment to increase academic achievement, reduce tardiness and absenteeism, support adolescent mental health and psychological well-being, and address adolescent driving safety.
